Job Description

The Health Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering engaging, age-appropriate health education instruction to middle and high school students in a special education setting. The teacher develops lessons that promote physical, social, emotional, and personal well-being while adapting curriculum, instructional strategies, and assessments to meet the diverse learning needs of students with disabilities. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary team members, the Health Teacher fosters a supportive, inclusive learning environment that encourages healthy decision-making, self-advocacy, independence, and the development of essential life skills.

This is a .5 position with an expected class day of approximately 11:30a - 3:30p. Note: This schedule is subject to change based on the needs of the building and the students.

Key Responsibilities:

• Deliver standards-based health instruction tailored to individual student needs and learning styles.
• Adapt curriculum and materials to support diverse cognitive, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional needs.
• Promote student understanding of personal health, wellness, safety, relationships, and healthy lifestyle choices.
• Collaborate with special education teachers, related service providers, families, and support staff to support student success.
• Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive classroom environment that supports student growth and independence.

The duties of this position may require specific skills and abilities based on the students’ needs and/or program, including but not limited to:

• Ability to work with a diverse population of students.
• Support students to ensure a safe, orderly environment that is conducive to teaching and learning.
• Implement specialized instruction to students.
• Collaborate with colleagues and assist teacher to meet student learning needs.
• Communicate regularly and effectively with stakeholders.
• Assist with maintaining record keeping.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings.
• Promote equity and culturally responsive practices to create inclusive environments

 

Job Qualifications

Required:

• Current NYS certification in Health. Candidates with dual certification in Physical Education are preferred
• Position requires the successful completion of all elements of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training. W-FL BOCES provides initial and refresher TCI training.

Preferred:

• Special Education certification preferred

• Candidates should possess a broad skill set of effective teaching and learning to engage learners of all levels, including but not limited to:

  • Knowledge of the NYS Learning Standards and Assessments
  • Knowledge of curriculum content and accepted methods of instruction
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Promoting equity and culturally responsive practices to create inclusive environments
