Teaching assistants provide instructional services to students under the general supervision of a licensed or certified teacher and completed related work as required. The duties of this position may require specific skills and abilities based on the students’ needs and/or program.
Depending on location, this position may involve direct work with students with autism, emotional and/or developmental disabilities which may include, but are not limited to, oppositional and aggressive behaviors; mood disorders; and potentially severe and unpredictable physical and/or verbal outbursts.
Only candidates who hold NYS Teacher Assistant certification or candidates who have passed the NYS Assessment of Teaching Assistant Test (NYSATAS) will be considered. Candidates willing to pursue Teaching Assistant certification may be considered.
Certification is required by the New York State Education Department - "Any person employed, as a teaching assistant, shall hold of one of the following credentials: temporary license, continuing certificate; or a Level I, II, III or Pre-Professional certificate. However, if an individual holds a teaching, pupil personnel, or administrative certificate, he or she need not also obtain a temporary license, continuing certificate, Level I, II, III or Pre-Professional certificate to serve as a teaching assistant, unless required by the employing district."
Essential elements of the position, that the candidate must be able to perform are the ability to do one and two person lifts and/or physical interventions on a daily basis with students weighing 50-200 pounds and the successful completion of all elements of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Training.
