Position Summary:

The Teaching Assistant for Assistive Technology Services provides in-person support to students with disabilities in K–12 educational settings across BOCES component districts. This position plays a key role in bridging the connection between students and their Assistive Technology Specialists, who provide services virtually (e.g., via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.). The Teaching Assistant acts as the on-site support for students during these remote sessions, ensuring technology is set up properly, the student is engaged, and strategies are carried over into the classroom.

The role focuses on implementing assistive technology solutions that help students access curriculum, build independence, and participate fully in classroom learning. The Teaching Assistant works under the guidance of Assistive Technology Specialists and collaborates with educators and service providers to support IEP goals and ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

1. Student Support (under the guidance of Assistive Technology Specialists)

  • Serve as the on-site liaison for students receiving virtual assistive technology services, helping them connect to remote sessions and remain actively engaged.
  • Support the student’s use of assistive technology devices, software, and applications as directed by the Assistive Technology Specialist.
  • Reinforce and practice strategies and skills introduced during virtual sessions to promote skill transfer and independence.
  • Support school personnel on behalf of the student in achieving IEP goals related to assistive technology use.

2. Instructional Assistance (under the guidance of Assistive Technology Specialists)

  • Prepare, adapt, and organize materials for student training and practice with assistive technology tools.
  • Model device usage, reinforce skill practice, and monitor student responses during and after virtual sessions.
  • Document student participation and technology use, reporting progress and challenges to the Assistive Technology Specialist.

3. Collaboration (under the guidance of Assistive Technology Specialists)

  • Partner with Assistive Technology Specialists and educational teams to implement student-specific technology interventions.
  • Collect and share data regarding student performance in various classroom environments.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with teachers, therapists, and staff to support consistent use of assistive technology throughout the school day.

4. Technology Support (under the guidance of Assistive Technology Specialists)

  • Assist in setting up, maintaining, and troubleshooting assistive technology equipment for classroom and remote sessions.
  • Monitor safe and appropriate use of devices, reporting issues promptly.
  • Support organization, inventory, and distribution of assistive technology resources across schools.

This position may involve direct work with students with autism, emotional and/or developmental disabilities, which may include, but are not limited to, oppositional and aggressive behaviors; mood disorders; and potentially severe or unpredictable physical and/or verbal outbursts. Teaching Assistants provide instructional services under the general supervision of a licensed or certified teacher and complete related work as required.

The duties of this position may require specific skills and abilities based on the students’ needs and/or program, including but not limited to those outlined above.
